The K1 visa is used for an engaged spouse to enter the United States to marry a citizen here within 90 days. Generally for this visa to be accepted the couple will have to met in person, at least once, within the past two years. This visa is to be lodged in an American embassy in the fiance's country of origin.
 
Also required for this visa:
 
-A passport valid for travel to the United States with more than six months expiry time left on date of arrival
-Police certificate from all countries lived in since age 16
-Evidence of relationship with fiance
-Medical examination
-Proof of financial independence
-Birth certificate
-Completed visa forms and fees
 
After the marriage has taken place the US citizen must lodge an  I-485 form in order for the spouse to become a permanent resident.
