Work Visas for the United States of America
A simple guide to help you get there and set yourself up on arrival
H1B Visa
This is the most well known working visa for the United States. Most of these visas will be for university
degree related jobs. Such roles that accept this visa are best located on a USA job search website. The company that you apply for
the job with will assist you in completing the visa process. More information can be located on my page about job searching located here. This visa has an annual pool of 65,000 and this allocation always runs out, so make sure to begin your applications early in
the year.
The legitimate site for entering the lottery can be accessed here.
Diversity Visa
This Diversity Visa (DV Visa) in an annual lottery dispersion of 50,000 visas throughout the globe. You have probably
seen this visa advertised in your spam junk mail or on an annoying popup window somewhere on the internet. This visa is totally legit
(it's how I moved here) and the entry requirements make it very accessible to the general public. Every year between the start of
October and the start or December entries are available for this visa drawing. That being said the odds of winning this visa are rather
slim (0.8% the year I entered), though there is no charge for entry and so this is definitely worth a look. If you win this visa the
process to complete your entry can be found here.
Warning: Do NOT pay to enter this lottery. There are many sites claiming to
assist you with entering this lottery, or by increasing your chances for a small/large fee. This is and has always been a free lottery.
The DV Visa drawing will disqualify multiple entries and you have no greater chance with these scam sites.
